Polona Maher (1971)
Dalla scultura Maher mutua i materiali che utilizza (alluminio, polipropilene) e l’azione che l’opera innesca nello spazio, entrandovi e facendone parte fisicamente. Dalla pittura mutua la piattezza, il colore, il segno ridotto a linea. Il ruolo affidato alla tridimensionalità è centrale e sancisce la ricerca attorno al confine tra oggetto scultoreo e oggetto pittorico: le sagome dei Kartoni partono dall’architettura, luogo per eccellenza della tridimensionalità.
Maher indaga infatti sulle forme dei kozocek, i tipici fienili in legno sparsi lungo il territorio sloveno. I suoi lavori consistono nel disegnare, riducendole fino all’essenza, queste strutture architettoniche, sforbiciando planimetrie e prospettive che si appiattiscono e non definiscono uno spazio tridimensionale. L’uso del colore giallo conferisce, ad un insieme piatto anche per la scelta della monocromia, una luminosità e una pulsazione interna che determina e fa vibrare le opere.
Maher borrows from sculpture the materials that she uses (aluminium or polypropylene) and the action that the sculpture is able to produce inside the space. The result is being physically inside the works. At the same time she embraces the characteristics of the practice of painting by borrowing flatness, color and the sign reduced to a line. The role of three-dimensionality is central. It represents her research around and between the sculpture and painting objects. The shapes of her Kartoni series start from architecture as the most immediate concept of three-dimensionality.
She enquires the shapes and forms of her own country wooden hay-lofts called kozocek. She starts by drawing them and then reducing the result to the essential data. As a second step she cuts the plans and perspectives to reach flat images that do not define a three-dimensional space. Then the use of yellow brings to these flat works a luminosity and an internal beating effect.
