Semiconductor (attivi dal 1999)
Sin dal 1999, il tandem composto da Ruth Jarman e Joe Gerhardt si è interessato al video e alle sue specifiche possibilità di animazione, investigando come l’uomo e il computer offrano una rappresentazione mediata ed interagita della realtà. I temi da loro esplorati riguardano la facoltà del multimediale di rappresentare il flusso fisico del mondo, compreso quello invisibile: le sue due estremità scalari, ossia il microcosmo della materia e i fenomeni astronomici; l’evoluzione dei paesaggi in quanto ecosistemi; o, ancora, la dinamica delle metropoli, come organismi in perpetuo ed entropico sviluppo.
Da un punto di vista tecnico, i Semiconductor hanno un modus operandi altrettanto definito: l’impiego di softwares o di modellatori 3D serve a modulare l’immagine della realtà con quella, appunto, del non visibile (modelli teorici, microstrutture della materia, etc.). Questo tipo di apertura dello spettro visivo concerne anche il sonoro, considerato il frequente ricorso ad un ribaltamento del rapporto consueto tra canale audio e video: in luogo di un accompagnamento sonoro alle immagini, sono quest’ultime a reagire e crearsi a seconda degli stimoli audio ricevuti.
Ever since 1999, the partners Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt have taken an interest in video and in its specific possibilities of animation, investigating how man and the computer can offer a mediated and interactive representation of reality. The themes they have explored concern the capacity of the multimedia to represent the physical flow of the world, including that which is invisible: its two opposite dimensions, i.e. the microcosm of matter and the astronomical phenomena; the evolution of landscapes as ecosystems: or, what’s more, the growth of the metropoleis, as organisms in perpetual and entropic development.
From a technical point of view, the Semiconductor have a definite modus operandi: the use of softwares or of 3D programs serves to modulate the image of reality with that, precisely, which is not visible (theoretical models, microstructures of matter, etc.). This kind of opening of the visual spectrum concerns the soundtrack as well, considering the frequent use of a reversal of the usual relationship between audio and video channels; in the place of a sound accompaniment to the images, it would be the latter that would react and be created according to the audio stimulus received.
