Sigurdur Gudjónsson (Reykjavik, 1975)

The breed è un video di diciassette minuti di durata, privo di qualsiasi dialogo e voce fuori campo. Tutto il movimento della camera e la tensione filmica si reggono sull'associazione tra le immagini, le persone, gli animali e gli ambienti. Una serie di accadimenti si sussegue, tra le attese e il crescendo, creato dall'ansimare o il fumare degli uomini, dai grugniti, da balugini che scuotono lievemente lo spettatore.
Il video è incentrato attorno ad un allevamento di maiali e ad un mattatoio. Le scene sono prettamente notturne, come la cupa luce che per un lungo periodo dell'anno l'Islanda, dove è stato girato il video e da dove proviene l'artista, riserva a causa della sua collocazione geografica. I volti dei maiali, mutilati, respiranti, stagionati prima del consumo, cucinati in una macabra pentola, ritornano ossessivamente. Così anche per alcuni volti umani: un uomo che fuma con un'espressione cinica e nervosa, un altro visibilmente trafelato, grondante di sudore e con metà del volto incerottato, quasi avesse subito uno sfregio o un trauma di cui non conosciamo l'origine.

The Breed is a video of 17 minutes, without any dialogues or any voice-over. The camera motion and the filmic tension keep going in the association between images, characters, animals and places. A series of happenings succeeds, through suspenses and crescendo. Happenings created by the panting and smoking of men, by the grunts, by the flickers that shake slightly the spectator. The video is focused on a swine-breeding and a slaughter-house. Scenes are merely nocturnal like the dark light due to the geographical position of Iceland, where the video was shooted and where the artist is from. Pig faces hauntingly recur: breathing, mutilated, seasoned before comsumption, cooked inside a macabre pot. The same happens with human faces: one man smoking with a nervous and cynical look; other one is clealry breathless, streaming with perspiration and half-face plastered, as if he has suffered a scar or a trauma about which we're ignoring the cause.
