Palazzo Altan

San Vito al Tagliamento

November 13, 2016 – January 8, 2017

Curated by Giorgia Gastaldon

In May 1976 Friuli Venezia Giulia was hit by a terrible earthquake which changed its identity in an indelible way and obviously ended up rewriting the future of its territory: 2016 marks the 40th anniversary of this tragedy and Palinsesti commemorates this recurrence with a collective exhibition entitled Fracturae.

In this occasion the concept of “break”- of the physical, visual, and also existential fault- does not only refer to tragedy, disaster, pain, destruction, and loss. On the contrary, this exhibition first of all investigates what comes after the quake, such as the recovery, the reconstruction, the necessity of creating a new starting point from a state of crisis for a different future, which does not necessarily mean a worse future. The history of Friuli shows exactly how tragedy can be a starting point for a new, brighter, and diversified history of the same territory. Therefore, the aim of the exhibition is to explore the topical subject of crisis (economic, social, environmental, working, generational) and the possibilities that all of us have to overcome it.
