Ane Mette Hol (1979)

Reversed site specific (2008) opens the sequence of the installations at the Ex-Cocoon Dryers. It starts off, thus, with a pre-existent work which inverts, even in its title, the concept of site specific. In the Norwegian gallery where she exhibits, Ane Mette Hol retrieved some protective paper set aside by the painters, along with an intact and still labelled roll of the same type. Spread out on the floor while the walls were being painted, these sheets of paper had caught all of the involuntary signs of the painting while it happened: drops of paint, adhesive tape, folding, footprints, etc. Hol limited herself to ‘copying’, or better still ‘remaking’ them, in a meticulous way and faithful to the original, using traditional graphic and painting media (paper, tempera, pencil, etc.), and to having them circulate in other expository contexts, reactivating each time the relation (fictitious) with the white walls under which they’re placed. For this reason, ‘copying’ is a reductive verb in her case.
