Mappe dell’astrazione

Curated by Luca Pietro Nicoletti

Mappe dell’astrazione (meaning, in Italian, ‘maps of abstraction’) presents several experiences of abstract contemporary art developed in Friuli Venezia Giulia during the 1980s, selected among artists from the area  as well as those who have passed through our territory. The result is a path dedicated to geometry and a radical use of colour. The exhibition starts with a homage to the sculptor Nane Zavagno, whose shapes, characterised by elementary volumes and mixtilinear contours, harmonize with the context in which they were created: the backlit silhouettes of his sculptures recall the rocks of the mountains, while others  assume organic morphologies or allude to the dynamics of coupling.

In 1985, in Pordenone, at the exhibition La soglia, the painters from the Astrazione povera group, - promoted by Filiberto Menna - Annibel Cunoldi Attems, Gianni Asdrubali and Bruno Querci presented paintings characterised by an almost lack of colours: black and white, or white combined with another saturated and full colour. During the same time period, or shortly before, a new research based on geometric drawing matured, resulting in a variety of outcomes, from the emphasized and intricate lines traced by Massimo Bottecchia to the phases of a symbolic use of elementary geometry by Livio Schiozzi.

Finally, the church of Santa Maria dei Battuti will host an installation by Claudio Borghi – a sculptor from the Lombardy area. However, the artist is well known in San Vito al Tagliamento because of a 2021 collaboration with the municipality to design a monument that will be placed in the city.
